Self-coach Sunday 50: Give Great Gifts

Don’t miss an opportunity to give spontaneous gifts for no reason. While you are picking up supplies for your office, why not pick some up for a friend, co-worker or spouse? If you bake something, take half to a friend or neighbor who loves your cooking. If you buy a magazine subscription, order a second for someone else. Or, just send a thank gift or note to someone who helped you.

The best gifts are the ones you didn’t even know you wanted. Make the whole year feel like a holiday! Keep a bottle of bubbly chilled and ready to open.

This week, make a list of everyone in your life you would like to give a special gift to and start giving. A thoughtfully written card will do perfectly. These people will be surprised and you both will feel terrific. Lets face it, the only reason to give gifts is because you get pleasure from it.  Spread the joy.

Holiday Healing

Tis the season…for getting sick.  You’ve fought it off all through the fall and winter; then, the holidays arrive, you get some time off, and you come down with a cold, flu or worse. I recently read a couple of articles that inspired me to share the details of why we get sick and how to keep healthy all the time, even through the stress of holidays.

First, we need to understand why we get sick. There are really 4 main reasons why we become sick:

1. Stress – this can be from physical or emotional in nature. Perhaps your work is pressured, your daily routines are too over-scheduled, you are a worrier, you are holding anger and not confronting it, you hold yourself to too high of a standard, or perhaps you have some heavier challenges that are weighing you down whether physical or mental or health-wise.

2. Focus – by focus, I mean either a positive or negative view of you and your life. The very thought you have when you first awake can set a chain reaction in you body and your day.  It has been shown that negative thoughts really do hamper your body’s health and diminish the body’s ability to fight of infection and disease.  Chose to be positive, even when you may feel otherwise.

3. Mental distress and distraction – you may have something that is pervading your thoughts all day.  Address it and don’t let it fester. Not being aware of your present moment puts a great deal of stress on the mind and as a result the body. Constant distraction is a sign that your health is headed for a bad turn.  Stay in the moment.

4. Body environment – if you are consumed with the three previous reasons we become sick, then your body weakens and it become the perfect host for any virus or bacteria that comes along.

Here are ways you can counteract the things that bring on sickness:

1. Visualization – imagine releasing toxins, pulling in healing energy.  Really create a vision by closing your eyes and imagining what this looks like.

2. Take on a positive attitude about everything. If you have pain when you awake, just be happy that there is light when you open your eyes in the morning, that your sheets are warm and cozy. Erase the first sign of a negative thought by immediately going to the positive.

3. Take time.  Breathe, rest, read, do nothing, walk slow, be late for something if rushing puts you in harm. Sleep in, go to bed early, play with your pet, hug your kids. Do whatever it is that slows you down and makes you feel indulgent.

4. Believe the body can heal.  You deserve to heal, and can heal. The mind is where it all starts.  Set that right and the healing WILL take place.

5. Make good choices. This means in all areas: food, exercise, friendship, words, actions, interactions, and doing every daily thing you do.

6. Give yourself permission to heal. This may be a bit redundant to #4, but it is worth listing again.

So, what do you do if you do get sick?  Here are the answers:

1. Positive thoughts. This is your prescription. Absolutely no negative thoughts no matter what sensations your body is feeling.

2. Distract yourself from the pain of disease. Do whatever you require to divert yourself from the negative – rent a movie, listen to music, read a book, take a bath, have a friend over…whatever it is that changes the focus of your current thought.

3. Do things that comfort you. Warm pajamas, hot tea, bath, fuzzy socks, a blanket, heating pad, pillows, a snuggly pet.

4. Rest, rest, rest.

5. Hydrate the heck out of yourself. You should be flooding yourself with nothing but good water.  It flushes the toxins out of your body and keeps you from creating a bad ecological system within.  Keep it clean with water!

6. Eat nutrient rich food. Juicing is great!  Stick to fruits and vegetables.  Avoid: sugar, dairy, meat, fried foods, processed foods, and acid foods. Eat alkaline foods.

7. Sit in the sunlight. Try to get up to 20 minutes a day.  Expose as much skin as you can for this period of time.  The sun has vitamin D and all kinds of great healing agents.  You might want to avoid times in the sun between 10am and 3pm when light is at its strongest.

8. Gargle with sea salt water a few times a day.

9. Sip water that has been boiled in an iron pot.  Store this ionized water in a stainless steel container and drink throughout the day.

10. Do not go back to the things you were doing prior to sickness.  Evaluate and change your life to remove the things that lead to sickness.
