Self-Coach Sunday 60: Get Some Perspective

Still trying to find your path in life? You may need to take a retreat from your current life and get a broader perspective. Go outside of yourself to see what really fills you up.

Here are some ways to take a retreat:

  1. Pack your bags and head to a B-n-B or cabin in the woods
  2. House sit for a friend
  3. Get out of the house – go to a cafe, restaurant, park, library, etc.
  4. Go on a yoga/spa retreat or to a ranch
  5. Go to a monastery or abbey

Try to go away or at least leave your house during the day for at least three days, if you can. Even one day can make a difference. Be sure to pack a  journal to record your thoughts. Keep it simple and don’t pack too much. During this time, get creative and find some way to get perspective on your life.

Self-Coach Sunday 59: Find Your Path In Life

Knowing what you want to do in life can be the key to happiness. Those with a plan, vision, purpose or goal will naturally attract people who are interested in going in the same direction.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is my purpose in life?
  2. What am I hear to accomplish or learn?
  3. What’s in my soul and heart to do?

Then, write down the answers in the form of a statement.  Ex. my purpose is to learn and love as fully as possible. Or, my purpose is to be a happy traveler. Your purpose does not have to be earth-shattering in scope. Be honest, real and simple.

Self-Coach Sunday 58: Let Your Intuition Lead The Way

Follow your intuition. It may lead you to finding your purpose or dream job. It helps to distinguish between your head talking – the rational part of you – and the other – intuition. Intuition is listening to your gut, and it always has your best interest at heart.  As you develop your intuition and start following its guidance, you will start to listen less and less to your head.

Start with little things: voice tells you to bring and umbrella, call someone, etc.  See if it was right. Give yourself 10 minutes throughout the day to sit in silence and just listen to what your intuition tells you. The result may be better decision making and good things coming your way.

Self-Coach Sunday 44: Identify Your Needs

How do you figure out your needs in the first place? Having emotional needs met helps you be at your best. When needs aren’t met you may feel irritable, unappreciated, angry, resentful, jealous, or deprived. Any one of these may indicate that your needs are not being met.

Pick your top 2-3 needs – what you must have to be at your best. Once you figure these out it will be much easier to fulfill or satisfy them. If some of the needs are negative in nature (drinking, overeating, overspending or any excess that harms the body and mind) that is important too.  You will have the need to balance that with more healthful behaviors. Even if you have addictive behaviors, your unmet needs may be prompting you to do things that aren’t in your best interest. Our needs are powerful and they drive our behaviors. If you are having trouble figuring this out, you may want to work with a health coach. Once you identify your needs, you will be ready to ask for what you really want.
